Michael Biopic Opens Worldwide at $217 Million as Mario Clears $800 Million and Project Hail Mary Reaches $613 Million

Michael’s biopic opened with a global roar, bringing in 217 million dollars for its opening frame. About 120.4 million came from international markets and 97 million from North America, a showing that eclipsed earlier expectations.

Roughly 200 million was invested in the production, with Lionsgate partnering with Universal and the Michael Jackson estate to bring the project to life. Jaafar Jackson stars as the King of Pop, while Antoine Fuqua directs the drama that traces Michael Jackson’s rise from the Jackson 5 to global superstardom. Some critics argue the portrayal is sanitized, but audiences have poured into theaters nonetheless.

Mario and Project Hail Mary in the global arena

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie pushed past 800 million worldwide, adding 36.6 million in 83 foreign markets during its fourth weekend. The overseas total stands at 444 million, lifting the global tally to roughly 831 million.

Project Hail Mary extended its run, collecting 12.2 million in its sixth weekend and reaching about 308 million abroad and 613.3 million worldwide.

David A. Gross, who runs FranchiseRe, notes, “Audiences like it, but reviews are weak.” The international numbers, though, have been especially strong, helping the weekend’s overall box-office story.

  • Michael’s top foreign territories include the United Kingdom and Ireland (about 15.6 million), France (10.1 million), Mexico (9.7 million), Brazil (8.2 million) and Italy (8.0 million). Japan has yet to open.

Jaafar Jackson marks his screen debut as Michael, with Fuqua guiding the project, and the film’s budget structure split among Lionsgate, Universal and the Jackson estate.
