Director weighs in on reports of DOJ action
Ivy Meeropol, the filmmaker behind Ask E. Jean, weighs in on rumors that the Justice Department may be launching a criminal probe into E. Jean Carroll. She characterizes the development as striking and, in her view, largely unsurprising given the ongoing political climate.
New York Times and CNN have reported that the DOJ could be examining whether Carroll lied under oath about funding for lawsuits against Donald Trump. Some briefs suggest prosecutors are reviewing potential perjury related to Carroll’s testimony about who financed the cases. The U.S. Attorney overseeing the Northern Illinois matter has denied Carroll was the target, though sources cited by CNN and the Times indicate that stance could evolve.
Meeropol adds that, from her perspective, there is no merit to a criminal inquiry, and she believes the film will reflect Carroll’s truth. She also notes the timing of the reports alongside the New York premiere of Ask E. Jean, framing it as part of the broader moment surrounding Trump.
Telluride debuted the documentary last year, and its New York run at IFC Center extended due to high demand. The film surveys Carroll’s long career as Elle magazine’s Ask E. Jean columnist and her foray into television, as well as the defamation suits against Trump that culminated in substantial judgments. Abramorama distributes the project with Theorem Media and a wide partner network that helped reach diverse audiences.
