Long before he became the Skipper on Gilligan’s Island, Alan Hale Jr. built a sturdy résumé in Westerns.
In 1957 he led Casey Jones, a half-hour syndicated series centered on the real-life 19th‑century railroad engineer. The show follows Casey Jones and his family as they work the Illinois Central’s Cannonball Express, mapping out a wholesome, family-friendly look at life on the rails. Hale Jr. headlines a cast that includes Mary Lawrence as Alice, Bobby Clark as Casey Jones, Jr., and character players like Dub Taylor and Eddy Waller as the train’s fireman and conductor.
Casey Jones ran for 32 episodes in a single season, produced for syndication rather than a major network. That same year Hale also took on roles across cinema and television, including a turn as Cole Younger in The True Story of Jesse James and appearances on The Texan. He would later join Up Periscope with James Garner, cementing a busy stretch in the late 1950s.
A footnote for fans of Gilligan’s Island: the series even included Hale’s future co-star Russell Johnson in an episode about a track-walker who helps save the train. Casey Jones stands as a charming, largely overlooked slice of Hale’s career, a testament to his versatility beyond the island’s banner comedy.
