Crunchyroll Fuels Sony Pictures’ Year, but Pixomondo Shutdown Caps Profits

Sony Pictures Entertainment wrapped its fiscal year with a roughly flat top line, reporting about $9.917 billion in sales for the 12 months ended March 2026. A surge in Crunchyroll titles helped offset a one-off hit tied to winding down the Pixomondo visual‑effects unit.

Profitability weakened, with operating income slipping 11% to $687 million. The decline was driven largely by a non-recurring impairment tied to Pixomondo’s closure. Excluding that wind‑down, operating income rose about 11% in dollars to roughly $858 million and climbed about 13% in yen terms to JPY 132 billion, helped by Crunchyroll and a steadier TV slate.

Crunchyroll’s subscriber base reached 21 million, up from 17 million a year earlier, underscoring the growth of anime as a global business. Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, called the milestone a testament to the worldwide fan community backing anime as a major entertainment form.

Beyond Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures highlighted several blockbuster anime titles contributing to the offset. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle delivered about $354 million at the worldwide box office, while other hits included GOAT ($183 million), 28 Years Later ($151 million), Anaconda ($135 million), and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc ($118 million).

The year demonstrates a dual story: a booming anime-driven revenue engine paired with the financial drag from Pixomondo’s wind‑down, shaping SPE’s annual results.
