French screen icon Nathalie Baye has died at 77, ending a luminous chapter in French cinema. She passed away Friday night at her Paris home after complications tied to Lewy body dementia, according to her family.

Early in her career, Baye collaborated with François Truffaut on Day for Night and with Jean-Luc Godard on Every Man for Himself, establishing a reputation for fearless, precise performances. She went on to anchor notable titles such as The Return of Martin Guerre and Venus Beauty Institute, and she found a broader audience through television in And the Band Played On.

In the United States, Baye is remembered for portraying Leonardo DiCaprio’s mother in Catch Me If You Can, a role that underscored her international reach. She later appeared in Downton Abbey: A New Era, and she appeared on the French series Call My Agent!, sharing the screen with her daughter Laura Smet.

Her achievements earned four César Awards, and she trained at Paris’s Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique, laying the foundation for a career that spanned more than five decades.

She is survived by Smet and other family members.
