Kilcher Takes Cameron and Disney to Court Over Avatar Look

A Yellowstone alum has filed a lawsuit claiming James Cameron and Disney used her facial likeness in Avatar without consent. Q’orianka Kilcher, who appeared on the show in a recurring role, says Cameron saw her performance in The New World (2005) at age 14 and directed his team to use her features as the basis for Neytiri’s look.

The complaint cites a YouTube clip of Cameron discussing his Paris Tech Noir exhibit, where he recalls taking inspiration from Kilcher’s appearance when shaping Neytiri’s design. Kilcher’s lawyers argue this constitutes biometric likeness exploitation to fuel a global franchise without permission.

Kilcher says she first met Cameron in 2010 at an environmental charity event, where he gave her a Neytiri sketch and a handwritten note implying she inspired the character. She says she believed it to be a personal gesture, not a signal that her face would be used commercially.

The filing asks for damages, disgorgement of profits tied to the use of her likeness, injunctive relief, and corrective disclosure. Kilcher’s counsel frames the case as a challenge to the use of biometric identity in a blockbuster pipeline.

THR reached out to Cameron and Disney for comment but did not hear back by publication time. The filing has been updated with Kilcher’s statements and a response from her attorney.
