Taraji P. Henson Questions Bezos-Backed Met Gala Attendance

Taraji P. Henson is weighing in on this year’s Met Gala, turning a sharp eye toward the guest list tied to Jeff Bezos’s sponsorship. She amplified a social post that urged celebrities not to wear ICE Out pins, arguing a billionaire-backed gala complicates the charity event.

The tweet she reshared points to the gala’s fundraising purpose while challenging the optics of Bezos’s involvement, especially given his political associations and arts-funding record. Henson’s reply was blunt and emphatic: “I am so confused by some ppl that are going. I am just like WTF ARE WE DOING!?!?!”

In a separate share, Henson posted a side-by-side from EU reproductive-rights group My Voice My Choice, contrasting Bezos’s reported $500 million superyacht with concerns raised by immigrant workers in Amazon warehouses. The caption simply read: “Enjoy the MET.” Bezos is reported to have contributed about $10 million to sponsor the gala.

Henson has long been a familiar figure at the May celebration, joined by names like Zendaya, Bella Hadid and Ariana Grande, who did not attend this year for reasons not publicly confirmed. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also opted out, citing a focus on affordability issues rather than the red-carpet spectacle.

The broader debate around wealth, philanthropy and the arts has intensified in coverage, with The New York Times noting boycott calls by activist groups. One sign of the controversy involved a protest that included bottles of fake urine placed at the Met, highlighting concerns about labor and corporate power tied to major players in tech and retail.

As the Met Gala remains the Costume Institute’s marquee fundraiser at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the guest list this year still featured a star lineup that sparked conversation—while some attendees remained unnamed in official accounts—among them Blake Lively, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna, Janelle Monáe, Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Bad Bunny, Emma Chamberlain and others.
