Euphoria Season 3 Goes Western, Filmed on 65mm Stock

Euphoria’s third season leans into Western mythos, pairing its signature neon energy with dusty frontier visuals. Creators Sam Levinson and cinematographer Marcell Rév say the shift is about scale and perception, not just a new look.

Levinson has long insisted the show must keep evolving. Rév echoes that sentiment, noting they resist getting stuck in a pattern and aim for fresh textures with every season.

For Season 3, the team pursued a more objective frame, stepping back from the handheld impulse of earlier episodes. They collaborated with Kodak on a stock that behaves more like vintage film, delivering skin tones and color with nostalgic nuance, while tungsten lighting adds a timeless Hollywood mood.

The Western lens anchors Rue’s storyline, with the border-crossing sequence framed against expansive landscapes. It marks the first time the series shoots with 65mm stock, a decision that began after on-set tests while some sequences were still considered for 35mm.

HBO approved broader use of the format, enabling wide shots as well as closeups to be captured on the same stock. The filmmakers say the choice opened the season’s pacing, allowing scenes to breathe rather than rush through them. Levinson describes the approach as a deliberate return to an old-Hollywood cadence, while Rév notes the process reflects their growth as filmmakers.

Episode 2 of Season 3 premieres on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, and Levinson and Rév will share deeper insights in a forthcoming Filmmaker Toolkit conversation.
