Theron weighs in on AI, dance and art

Charlize Theron has publicly pushed back against Timothée Chalamet’s remarks about ballet and opera, arguing that artificial intelligence may soon emulate some acting tasks but cannot replace performers live on a stage.

In a New York Times interview, she lauded dance as one of the most demanding disciplines, calling dancers “superheroes” for the precision, endurance and quiet strength their craft requires. She recalled the discipline, noting the daily grind, injuries, and the silence that makes live dance so powerful.

Theron also referenced the wave of backlash Chalamet faced after downplaying interest in ballet and opera, noting that many in those communities responded with invitations and critique from peers. The moment drew laughs and commentary from various corners of the arts world, including jokes from Conan O’Brien and others.

Looking ahead, she said that within about a decade AI might be able to do Timothée’s job in front of the camera, but it will not replace a real performer on stage, and the arts deserve ongoing support and celebration.
