Lorne Michaels: SNL U.K. Should Outwit and Outlaugh the U.S. Edition

Lorne Michaels envisions SNL U.K. as a sharper, wittier version that stands apart from its American sister show. He says the UK edition should feel like the cooler of the two, delivering originality and a fresh edge rather than mirroring what happens in the U.S.

Speaking after a Los Angeles premiere screening of his new documentary, Michaels stressed that the UK program must carve its own voice. He notes ongoing talks with UK producers and the head writer, while insisting the project belongs to its creators in Britain.

“SNL U.K.” debuted on March 21 with a cast that includes Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shepp, Emma Sidi and Paddy Young.

The Focus Features documentary directed by Morgan Neville blends archival material with interviews from SNL veterans such as Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Andy Samberg, Conan O’Brien and Chris Rock. Michaels, now 81, says retirement isn’t in his plans, and the film captures his ongoing involvement while signaling that the U.K. edition will run its own course.

As the premiere night wound down, industry attendees suggested the show’s fate will hinge on bold humor and a distinctly British sensibility.
