Hasbro is reviving a cult favorite for a limited big-screen run timed to its 40th anniversary. The Transformers: The Movie, first released in 1986, has endured as a fan favorite despite a rocky box-office start, in part for its bold storytelling and a controversial turn that saw several key characters meet their end.

In partnership with Fathom Entertainment, the brand owner is bringing the animated feature back to cinemas, embracing its notoriety with a new merchandising push as part of an “Apology Tour.” The plan is to reissue the film to new and longtime fans alike.

The revival kicks off September 17 with a U.S. rollout that continues through September 21, and will be shown in 4K. A handful of international markets are expected to join on day-and-date with the U.S. release.

The original voice cast returns for this screening, including Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Frank Welker as Megatron. The lineup also features Orson Welles as Unicron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wrek-Gar and Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, among others. Alyse D’Antuono, Hasbro’s VP of global brand strategy, says the re-release invites both longtime fans to revisit a formative chapter and new audiences to discover it.

Ray Nutt, the chief executive of Fathom, notes that even after four decades the film remains a landmark in the Transformers saga, now presented in 4K for a fresh theatrical experience.

Historically, the movie drew criticism for what some viewed as a short runtime and a heavy focus on toy marketing. Hasbro is leaning into that legacy this year, blending nostalgia with new memorabilia as part of its anniversary strategy.
