Planet of the Apes Reboot taps Matt Shakman, fresh from Fantastic Four

Matt Shakman, the director behind The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is poised to helm a new Planet of the Apes movie for 20th Century Studios. The project will be produced with Josh Friedman, the scribe who worked on First Steps and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver also on board. Specific story details are being kept under wraps as production moves forward.

The return to the apes universe follows a track record that includes the prior installment Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which earned nearly $400 million worldwide on a $160 million budget. Across the modern series, the franchise has amassed more than $2 billion at the global box office over its run.

Shakman, whose recent credits include WandaVision and a string of pilots for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, The Consultant and Welcome to Chippendales, will bring his TV and film sensibilities to the project. He’ll produce alongside 20th Century’s team, with Scott Aversano overseeing developments for the studio.
