Masterpiece PBS and Channel 5 are cooking up a six‑part reimagining of Monarch of the Glen, the beloved Scottish Highlands drama that once graced screens at the turn of the millennium. The new series is produced by Ecosse Films in collaboration with Masterpiece, with Banijay Rights handling international distribution.
Filming is set to take place in Scotland and Northern Ireland later this year, with development support coming from The National Lottery through Screen Scotland.
The plot follows Isla Campbell, a high‑flying London lawyer who returns to her family’s crumbling Highland estate for her father’s funeral. Her return unveils a mountain of debt and a brother clinging to the ancestral home, all under one roof as they race to save the estate before time runs out.
Jeremy Brock wrote and created the series, with Stephen Greenhorn as co‑writer. Tom Vaughan acts as executive producer and director, joined by producers Alex Boyd, Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae for Ecosse. Susanne Simpson remains a key figure for Masterpiece, guiding the project’s scripted development.
Development emphasizes warmth, humor and a Highlands sensibility tailored for U.S. audiences as it travels to international markets. Casting hasn’t been announced yet.
