Andrew Scott and George MacKay will voice Russell Tovey’s debut novel, Starlings, when it lands as an Audible Original. The London-set drama centers on family rifts and queer identity.
Centered on Donald, a forty-something who longs to perform as a drag artist, the story peels back years of bitterness masked by wit and style. After his father catches him in women’s clothes, Donald’s ties to his northern roots blurred into a long avoidance of his past.
When their father dies, Donald’s younger brother Owen returns, forcing a tense reckoning and a chance to confront old wounds. The narrative follows their tentative journey toward healing, spilling into drag shows, dive bars, and late-night conversations that shape who they are becoming.
The ensemble also features Michele Austin, Julian Kostov and Jason Patel, with real drag performers Dosa Cat, Gigi Zahir, and That Girl, and Tovey appears in a voice role throughout the production.
In his own words, Tovey calls the project a privilege to bring to life with Audible’s team and a cast he greatly admires. He has spoken publicly about his parents’ initial struggle to accept his sexuality, a thread that informs the novel’s emotional core.
Starlings is due July 1 as an Audible Original, marking Tovey’s first published novel and the launch of this significant audio adaptation.
