Netflix Unveils I Am Frankelda, a Mexican Stop-Motion Horror Musical

Netflix has released the official trailer for I Am Frankelda, a Mexican stop-motion feature arriving on the platform June 12. Directors Arturo and Roy Ambriz, who run Cinema Fantasia, expand on their Cartoon Network Latin America project Frankelda’s Book of Spooks, a five-episode series that debuted in 2021 with a ghostly writer at the center.

This film acts as a prequel, tracing Frankelda’s origins as she fights to have her dark tales heard. When she ventures into her subconscious, the monsters she created awaken, and she’s guided by Herneval, a tormented prince trapped between dreams and nightmares. Together they must restore balance between fiction and reality before both realms collapse.

Meanwhile, the sinister writer Procustes and his conspirators plot to seize control, testing Frankelda’s resolve. As the bond between Frankelda and Herneval deepens, their connection becomes a source of strength and a potential curse that could shape her fate as a storyteller.

I Am Frankelda is billed as Mexico’s first independent stop-motion feature. The Ambriz brothers wrote, directed and produced the movie, with Ana Coronilla and Bruce Zick handling production design, Beto Petiches directing the animation, and Irene Melis and Fernanda G. Manzur serving as directors of photography. Kevin Smithers composed the score, and the voice cast includes Mireya Mendoza, Arturo Mercado Jr., and Luis Leonardo Suárez.

Netflix will stream the film in both its original Spanish with subtitles and an English-language dub, making the spooky tale accessible to a global audience. The trailer offers a glimpse of a darkly whimsical world where storytelling and nightmares intertwine.
