Christopher Nolan’s Almost-Troy: How the Epic Became a Quiet Streaming Hit

Christopher Nolan was once slated to direct the Trojan epic Troy, a project that would eventually star Brad Pitt. In a 2025 interview, Nolan said Warner Bros. hired him to helm the 2004 adaptation before Wolfgang Petersen came aboard.

Petersen developed Troy, and after Warner Bros. chose not to move forward with his Batman v Superman plan, he pressed to reclaim the project. Nolan noted that the world of Troy still fascinated him, and he remained eager to explore that myth in cinema.

The film went on to pull in about $483 million worldwide. Critics were mixed, praising the sweeping visuals while some felt the emotional core was lacking.

Today Troy endures as a streaming standby, ranking among AMC+’s top ten most-watched titles in the United States.

Meanwhile, Nolan has since pursued new subjects, including The Odyssey, a Greek‑mythic project in which the Battle of Troy figures prominently.

Brad Pitt’s towering presence remains a touchstone of Troy’s enduring appeal.
