After a decade away from the screen, Kenneth Lonergan is positioning a comeback with a new project that goes by Tomorrow Is a Drag. The package already has a high-profile lineup attached, with Aubrey Plaza and Adam Driver in the lead, and Vanessa Kirby along with Matthew Broderick in supporting roles, according to Cannes market chatter.
International sales are being handled by MK2 Films, while WME is representing the film in North America, as the project hits the market at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
Plot specifics remain under wraps, but the combination of Lonergan’s past work and the cast’s pedigree has film industry observers buzzing about a potential major release.
Lonergan built his reputation first as a playwright in the 1990s, with plays such as This Is Our Youth, The Waverly Gallery, and Lobby Hero. He has spent the 21st century alternating between theatre and cinema, directing You Can Count on Me (2000), Margaret (2011), and Manchester by the Sea (2016), and continuing to write for screen.
Driver’s latest film, James Gray’s Paper Tiger, premiered to strong notices at Cannes, with several critics hailing it as a career highlight for the actor. That reception bodes well for the momentum of Tomorrow Is a Drag as it moves forward.
Plaza’s upcoming projects include a Heidi Fleiss biopic and a collaboration with Zach Woods, among others; she is also attached to The Heidi Fleiss Story and The Accompanist, and then The Thomas Crown Affair with Michael B. Jordan in development. Details on Tomorrow Is a Drag’s production schedule remain under wraps as the package gains traction.
A representative for Lonergan did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment.
