Cannes unveils the festival’s Nepalese feature Elephants in the Fog, which has already secured its first round of international sales. The project is being steered into global markets by Best Friend Forever, the film’s international sales partner.
In France, distribution will be handled jointly by Arizona Distribution and Les Valseurs. Germany and Austria are spoken for by missingFILMS, while Imovision has picked up the rights for Brazil. Nepal’s domestic release will be managed by The Tea Folks Films.
The film’s producers include Underground Talkies Nepal, alongside Les Valseurs and Die Gesellschaft DGS. A broader slate of co‑productions supports the project, with Enquadramento Produções, Bubbles Project, Zischlermann Filmproduktion, Storm Films, Jayantii Creations and partners at ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel and ZDF/ARTE among the collaborators.
The story follows Pirati, the matriarch of a Nepalese Kinnar community living beside a forest frequented by elephants. When a daughter goes missing, she is forced to weigh love against responsibilities to her community.
Elephants in the Fog marks the feature debut of director Abinash Bikram Shah, whose short Lori earned a Special Mention at Cannes’ Short Film Competition in 2022 and who has contributed to Shambhala’s screenplay for Berlinale Competition in 2024. The Cannes premiere signals a notable milestone for Nepalese cinema on the world stage.
