The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has rocketed out of theaters with a mammoth global launch, tallying about $372.5 million across previews and opening screens. The movie lands as the year’s strongest worldwide start for a major Hollywood release, and it sits among the top all-time worldwide openings for animated features in the MPAA era.
In North America, the five-day tally sits near $190 million, cementing its status as a record-setting family release. The weekend run played in roughly 23,500 locations across 54,000 screens, underscoring the scale of the launch.
Internationally, the film amassed roughly $182.4 million across 80 markets. Mexico led the charge with about $29.1 million, followed by the United Kingdom and Ireland with around $19.7 million. Germany, France and Spain posted solid showings in the mid-teens to low tens of millions, and China opened with about $8.4 million as it began its own rollout in markets where game IP resonates strongly.
The impressive start highlights Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal’s continued strength in animated IP, marking the second-biggest global opening for a Universal animation title and the second-largest global bow for a film adapted from a video game, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It also reinforces the studio’s streak of blockbuster starts for Illumination’s output in recent years.
