Viggo Mortensen is reportedly not returning as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a development that has fans buzzing about the film’s direction. The project is moving forward under Andy Serkis, with a focus on a pivotal arc from Tolkien’s lore that would see Aragorn entangled in the chase of Sméagol near Mordor.

Mortensen has long been selective about tentpole roles, prioritizing material that stays true to the source and a commitment he’s ready to honor. In the past, he declined big signatures like Wolverine and even sidestepped The Hobbit’s sprawling schedule, underscoring his careful approach to character and timing.
Earlier, producer Philippa Boyens suggested Mortensen could return if a script convinces him, stressing that the decision hinges on whether the role feels right. Serkis and Jackson’s camp have also indicated they’re pursuing a strong collaboration with Mortensen in mind, though a formal agreement remains unsettled.

As the production gears up in New Zealand, the team has assembled a high-profile lineup and behind-the-scenes talent. Serkis directs and portrays Gollum, with longtime Middle-earth collaborators Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens producing. The project is expected to welcome returning veterans like Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood, and reports place Kate Winslet in a supporting role as well. A late-2027 release is on the calendar, aiming to redefine this chapter of Middle-earth for a new audience.
Whether Mortensen ultimately signs on or not, the plan continues, and fans will eagerly await how the script evolves. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
