Star Trek Showrunners Hint a Strange New Worlds Movie Would Spotlight Captain Pike
Star Trek’s current arc is designed as a finite run, with Strange New Worlds planned to conclude after five seasons and roughly 50 episodes. Set as a prequel aboard the same U.S.S. Enterprise, it unfolds a few years earlier and overlaps with the classic timeline.
The show leans on Starfleet’s tradition of multi‑year missions, a framework that keeps the adventures within a defined arc. Early development chatter even floated the idea of a standalone Strange New Worlds movie, described at one point as a roughly two‑hour feature.
Showrunners Henry Alonzo Myers and Akiva Goldsman have mused that any film would likely center on Captain Pike, the role portrayed by Anson Mount. Goldsman notes the project isn’t in their hands and would hinge on a green light from Paramount/Skydance chief David Ellison, a known Trekkie who would weigh pitches.
Myers adds that the TV format thrives on the ensemble, and a Pike‑led movie would feel like a step away from giving other crew members their own spotlight in standalone episodes.
Still, both writers acknowledge they’d happily craft a Pike‑focused story if the chance arose, even as they favor the broader cast approach. Goldsman says he would gladly keep making Strange New Worlds as long as the studio continues backing it.
For fans hoping to see more adventures, Strange New Worlds remains available to stream on Paramount+.
