Rian Johnson Unveils a Highly Personal Knives Out Mystery at the London Film Festival

Rian Johnson and Wake Up Dead Man cast at the BFI London Film Festival

Wake Up Dead Man has rolled into London as the fall festival season kicks into gear. The film marks the latest entry in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out universe and opens Netflix on December 12. Daniel Craig returns as Benoit Blanc, joined by a high-profile ensemble that includes Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Cailee Spaeny and Daryl McCormack.

Johnson describes this project as his most personal take on the series, using it to explore faith and religion through the lens of his own upbringing. He told THR there are no Knives Out 4 plans yet—he wants to “empty the well” and start anew when the time comes, if the team decides to continue the saga.

Cast members spoke about the collaborative, welcoming atmosphere Johnson and star Daniel Craig foster on set, noting how that energy helps performers grow. At the London premiere, they teased a mystery that feels more intimate and provocative than previous installments.

The festival opens with a slate of premieres, including Netflix titles and other budding projects. The Toronto world premiere of Wake Up Dead Man drew early praise, with critics highlighting Josh O’Connor’s standout presence even though he did not attend the LFF screening.

The London Film Festival runs October 8–19, showcasing a mix of premieres and encounters with cinema’s biggest names, as Johnson and crew set the stage for a new Knives Out chapter that leans into personal storytelling.
