The European Film Academy has tapped Liv Ullmann for a lifetime achievement honor, to be handed out at the 38th European Film Awards. The recognition spotlights Ullmann’s enduring influence across acting, directing, and screenwriting.
Born in Tokyo and raised across Canada and Norway, Ullmann began as a stage actress in Oslo before crossing paths with Ingmar Bergman in the mid-1960s. That collaboration yielded some of cinema’s most celebrated performances.
Her standout Bergman projects include Persona (1966), Shame (1968), Cries and Whispers (1972), Scenes from a Marriage (1974), Face to Face (1976), and Autumn Sonata (1978). She’s a two-time Oscar nominee for The Emigrants (1971) and Bergman’s Face to Face, and she received an honorary Academy Award in 2022.
Beyond acting, Ullmann has directed features such as Sofie (1992), Kristin Lavransdatter (1995), Private Confessions (1996), Faithless (2000), and Miss Julie (2014).
Off screen, she serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch the Women’s Refugee Commission, where she remains an honorary chair. She will attend the Berlin ceremony as an honorary guest on January 17, 2026, with the event streamed live on the European Film Academy’s website.
