John Lithgow Joins HBO’s Harry Potter Series as Dumbledore, First Look Surfaces

HBO’s long‑gestating Harry Potter series moves forward with a new Dumbledore in the fold. John Lithgow is captured in full Albus Dumbledore regalia in recently released set photos.

Wizarding World Direct shared the snaps on social media, showing Lithgow’s white beard and flowing robes. The release marks a fresh chapter for the Wizarding World on television, years after the film era wrapped.

The series is being steered by Francesca Gardiner, a Succession veteran, with Mark Mylod aboard to direct episodes and help shape the show. The cast also features rising talents in the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione — Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton — alongside Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Producers say each book will anchor a full season, giving the world time to breathe and expand. Some fans have raised questions about whether rebooting the saga truly offers something new, but HBO remains committed to a 2027 premiere.
