Celebrated Norwegian actress and filmmaker Liv Ullmann is set to receive the European Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 38th European Film Awards, taking place in Berlin in January 2026.

Ullmann broke through as a muse and collaborator for Ingmar Bergman, starring in a string of acclaimed films such as Persona, Shame, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, Face to Face, and Autumn Sonata. She was born in Tokyo and spent part of her youth in Canada before moving to Norway with her mother and sister.

Her career spans acting and directing, with early Norwegian work giving way to international recognition. Notable titles include The New Land (1972) and The Emigrants (1971), the latter earning an Oscar nomination, along with Farewell Moscow that earned a David di Donatello.

As a director, Ullmann has helmed Sofie (1992) and adaptations such as Kristin Lavransdatter (1995) and Private Confessions (1996). Faithless (2000) premiered in Cannes and earned a Goya nomination. Her later work includes Miss Julie (2014) with Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain.

Her career has brought several honorary prizes from national and European bodies, along with the European Film Academy’s World Cinema Award and an Honorary Oscar. Beyond cinema, Ullmann engages in humanitarian work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and as a co-founder and honorary chair of the Women’s Refugee Commission.

The January 17 ceremony will be the first under a new slot for the European Film Awards, shifting from December to better align with the broader awards season calendar.
