European Film Academy to honor Liv Ullmann with career award
Liv Ullmann will be celebrated by the European Film Academy with its career award, recognizing her decades of achievement as an actor, director and screenwriter. The honor spotlights a towering figure in European cinema whose work helped shape a generation of filmmakers.
Her rise to international stardom came through her collaborations with Ingmar Bergman. Ullmann acted in ten of his films and directed two of his screenplays, forming a defining creative partnership. Bergman was also the father of her daughter, author Lin Ullmann.
Beyond acting, Ullmann has directed a string of features, including Sofie (1992), Kristin Lavransdatter (1995), Private Confessions (1996), Faithless (2000) and Miss Julie, the adaptation that starred Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain.
“Liv Ullmann has helped to shape our understanding of European film,” the European Film Academy stated. The 38th European Film Awards will take place on January 17, 2026, in Berlin.
