Sheridan Tightens Grip on Frisco King, Recasting a Tulsa King Spin-off with Yellowstone Echoes

A fresh Taylor Sheridan spinoff is edging toward production, but it isn’t simply Yellowstone’s next chapter. The Tulsa King offshoot once known as NOLA King has been rebranded Frisco King and is being reshaped with Sheridan taking the reins on writing the first season. The setting shifts from New Orleans to Frisco, Texas, placing it near Sheridan’s Fort Worth operation.

Samuel L. Jackson remains attached as the lead, with production centered at his SGS studios campus in the area. Sheridan has moved from supervising to writing all eight episodes of the first season himself, signaling tighter, more authorial control over the project.

Behind the scenes echoes of Yellowstone

The Frisco King rewrite mirrors a notable pattern from Yellowstone’s third season, where Sheridan described behind-the-scenes strife and stepped in to write the season solo. He reportedly drafted eight scripts for Frisco King in a short window to get the pilot ready, a parallel to his earlier solo run on Yellowstone.

Earlier, Dave Erickson was originally slated to pilot the spinoff, but by mid-2025 his involvement wound down and the project underwent a drastic rebrand, changing not only the city but the title as well.

Sheridan’s evolving control of his TV universe

The Frisco King reshaping is part of a broader pattern: Sheridan maintains tight control over his expanding slate. While some projects like Marshals and Dutton Ranch have shifted to other developers, he remains deeply involved in shaping the overarching universe and has even relocated the production footprint nearer his home base.

As the universe grows, critics note that Sheridan’s fingerprints stay visible in storytelling, regardless of who handles day-to-day production.
