Diego Luna is stepping into a role crafted specifically for Disney’s Tangled live-action remake, joining Kathryn Hahn who will portray the scheming Mother Gothel.
The Andor star is set to begin work on the film when principal photography kicks off in Spain this June. Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim will headline the cast as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, after being chosen following a cross‑continental casting search in December.
Creative team and cadence
Director Michael Gracey, known for musical storytelling, will guide the adaptation, which aims to mirror the musical energy of the 2010 animated original. Kristin Burr’s Burr! Productions produces the project, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor co-writing the script. Disney’s Jessica Virtue oversees the production for the studio’s live-action team.
Luna’s connection to Disney goes beyond Tangled, thanks to his acclaimed turn in Andor, the Star Wars series from Tony Gilroy. He’s also lined up Ashes (Ceniza en la boca), a drama he directed and co-wrote, which will premiere at Cannes. Additionally, he stars in Netflix’s Mexico 86, a true-story drama.
