At CinemaCon, filmmaker Zach Cregger stepped into the spotlight with his latest project, a fresh take on the Resident Evil saga for Sony. After building a reputation with genre hits Barbarian and Weapons, he is steering a high‑stakes adaptation that Sony believes could become a breakout hit in 2026. The studio previewed the footage during its afternoon CinemaCon presentation, signaling confidence in a film described as a relentless chase through a nightmarish landscape.

The teaser condensed its setup into a single, harrowing journey for its lead, eschewing heavy backstory. Viewers watch Austin Abrams navigate a hellish scenario, with stark, bloody imagery and monstrous threats. A pivotal moment catches Abrams’s character leaving a voicemail to his girlfriend, confessing that things have spiraled far beyond control and that communication may be lost.

Cregger described his intent on stage: he’s drawn deeply from the video games but aims to preserve the tense pacing and survival mindset. Unlike Weapons, this version centers on one protagonist, advancing from one perilous checkpoint to the next, with little room for time shifts or alternate viewpoints.

The project stars Austin Abrams alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson. Cregger co‑wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, directing the film for Sony.

Beyond Resident Evil, Cregger’s slate remains packed. He’s developing a prequel to Weapons that would revisit Aunt Gladys, tapped Zach Shields as a co‑writer, and is attached to an original sci‑fi project called The Flood. He’s also associated with an original DC feature titled Henchman, a script he reportedly pitched to Warner Bros. If the film lands big, a follow‑up could quickly accelerate.

Sony plans a wide release for Resident Evil on September 18, inviting audiences to the next stage of this video‑game adaptation era.
