A Whitby, Ontario cinema outing turned chaotic when three young men yelled that someone inside was armed, aiming to film a social‑media stunt. The panic caused crowds to surge toward the exits as staff and patrons scrambled for safety.
Police account and charges
Durham Regional Police say the incident outside Landmark Cinemas’ 24‑screen complex on March 17, 2026, was a false disturbance intended to generate online content. There was no firearm and no injuries were reported.
Investigators charged two 23‑year‑olds, Fique Wamiq Ayub and Jaiden Joseph‑Anthony Mosquera, along with a 17‑year‑old who cannot be named, with causing a disturbance and with mischief after reviewing footage and witness accounts. Police appealed for public tips to help complete the case.
Experts warn that pranks staged for social media can cross legal lines, especially when they imitate a serious threat. The episode illustrates how quickly a hoax can disrupt a crowded public space and lead to criminal consequences.
