Andy Serkis Confirms a New Aragorn for The Hunt for Gollum

Aragorn Recast Signals a New Era for Middle-earth

In a surprising pivot for The Lord of the Rings universe, The Hunt for Gollum will feature a different actor stepping into Aragorn’s boots. The prequel sits in the interstice between The Hobbit and the original trilogy, following Aragorn and Gandalf as they track down Gollum for clues about Bilbo’s ring.

Director and motion‑capture veteran Andy Serkis confirms the casting shift while continuing to portray Gollum. He says the search for a fresh Aragorn is underway and that a new performer will take on the role of the future king.

The project is being steered by Serkis with production partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, with a planned release date of December 17, 2027. It’s noted that Mortensen’s return isn’t set, but Ian McKellen has signaled he’ll reprise Gandalf, and Elijah Wood has teased a Frodo cameo if plans align.

Mortensen has previously indicated he’d consider reprising the part if the timing and the aging of the character fit the story. The new timeline allows for Aragorn to be younger, and de-aging is even discussed for Frodo should his path cross the film’s pages.

As the saga expands, Peter Jackson’s return to producing anchors the project, while the hunt for a new Aragorn adds a modern frontier to the beloved epic. The decision signals a reimagined chapter for Middle-earth that enthusiasts will watch closely.
