Mary Beth Hurt, the Tony-nominated actress behind Interiors, Six Degrees of Separation, The World According to Garp and other memorable films, died in New Jersey after Alzheimer’s disease was diagnosed in 2015. Her husband, filmmaker Paul Schrader, issued his first public reflection on her passing in a concise Facebook post.
In his note, Schrader touched on a memory from his family’s past—a long‑kept journal entry by his father about his mother—and suggested he finally understood the weight of that moment.
The pair wed in Chicago in August 1983 and raised two children, Molly and Sam. They collaborated on four Schrader‑directed features—Light Sleeper, Affliction, The Walker and Adam Resurrected—and after Hurt’s diagnosis Schrader became her caregiver, even moving into The Coterie, a New York City assisted‑living facility, to stay close.
Their daughter Molly later shared a heartfelt Instagram tribute, describing her mother as a wife, sister, mother and friend and expressing a sense of relief that she is no longer suffering, now reunited with her sisters in peace.
