Wicked: Erivo and Grande Staked in Separate Oscar Categories

The Wicked campaign is keeping Cynthia Erivo in the lead category and Ariana Grande in supporting, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Erivo will be pitched as best actress, while Grande is lined up for best supporting actress as the awards push moves forward.

Both stars earned Critics Choice, SAG, Golden Globes, BAFTA and Academy Award nods for Wicked in the past, and the sequel’s longer screen time hasn’t triggered a category swap. The decision remains the same as the original plan, focusing on two distinct races for the film’s two leads.

Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters nationwide on November 21, 2025, boosting the awards conversations as the fall season heats up. The studio aims to maximize visibility across categories while preserving the split-track strategy.

An Oscar nomination for Erivo would be the fourth of her career, following prior recognition for Harriet in 2019; Grande would earn her second nomination. If Erivo wins, she would complete an EGOT, joining a rare cohort of performers who have achieved the four major entertainment honors.
